Every January, Global Languages offers intensive language classes and non-credit activities for the MIT community during the Independent Activities Period (IAP). In addition to introductory classes in regularly-offered languages, our IAP participants can study languages that are not yet offered during the Fall and Spring semesters.

Recent offerings include American Sign Language, Chinese calligraphy, Kichwa, and Ukrainian. Classes with a 21G subject designation will be offered for credit.

21G.S02 Special Subject: Introduction to Swahili Language and Culture (9 units)

This course introduces students to Swahili, the most widely spoken African language in the world. It belongs to the elite class of the world’s top dozen international languages. The course aims to have every student develop proficiency and literacy in the Swahili language. Students will encounter the history of Eastern African and the Indian Ocean through Swahili and its diverse traditions noting it’s cultural hybridity borne out of a history of a great diversity of people, most of them Africans, that call both sea and land, home. Swahili culture is seamless in word and thought both maritime and agricultural. Swahili is a great example of what an ubuntu cosmopolitan ethos is like.  The course provides the opportunity for learning a new language African style, where a class that begins with complete strangers becomes a community of learners -talkative and with substance. 21G.S08 Introduction to Ukrainian Language and Culture (9 units)

Introduces students to the foundations of Ukrainian language and essential communication skills. Surveys topics in Ukrainian history, national identity, and diverse Ukrainian culture and art through looking at major figures in literature, music, cinematography, and visual arts. Explores the role of Ukrainian art in the world, underlining its connections and influences. Gives students the opportunity to learn, discover, create, and have fun . . . including to have a taste of Ukrainian cuisine!
